Letters We Love

Our cruise was THE BEST vacation we've even taken.  The ship staff and crew were incredible.  We've never been treated with such consistently amazing service.  Everyone was so friendly and went out of their way to make sure everything was perfect.  Food, entertainment, service and EVERYTHING was far above our expectations.  This was our first cruise and the Cruiseman was tremendously helpful.  He did everything for us and answered all of our questions.  David & Mary Ann Brown; Springfield, MO  - (Carnival Ecstasy  August 8th, 2009)

Drama at sea: Disney cruise ship comes to rescue after Carnival passenger goes overboard

A Disney cruise ship sailing off the coast of Florida has rescued a Carnival passenger who went overboard during the night.

Disney spokeswoman Rena Langley says the Disney Wonder pulled the passenger out of the water at about 12:45 am ET after responding to a call for help from the Carnival Sensation.

Langley says the Disney ship was about 17 miles south of Port Canaveral, Fla., when it made the rescue, and the ship brought the passenger into the port where he was taken to a hospital by ambulance as a precaution.

Carnival has issued a brief statement saying the passenger who went overboard from the Carnival Sensation overnight was seen jumping from a balcony.

"Yesterday evening, at approximately 11:15 p.m., a 34-year-old male guest was witnessed jumping overboard from a balcony stateroom on the Carnival Sensation," the statement says. "The ship immediately began search and rescue operations, including returning the vessel to the area where the man was witnessed going overboard."

In the statement, Carnival also thanked the officers and crew of the Disney Wonder, and the U.S. Coast Guard, for aiding in the search.

Great Cruise Opportunity!

Next Summer Holland America's Amsterdam will do a series of  14 night "Alaskan Adventurer" cruises from Seattle, sailing every other Monday.

An unusual twist is that the ship will actually port in Anchorage from 7AM - 11PM, and offer shore excursions as far north as Talkeetna. (most ships are too large to port in Anchorage)

Rates start at $1899pp*  inside and $1999pp* oceanview, with onboard credits for many sailings.  For sailing dates and itinerary details  CLICK HERE.

Strong demand prompts Celebrity to shift another cruise ship to Europe

In a last-minute shift, Celebrity Cruises today announced it will send the Celebrity Century to Europe next summer instead of keeping the ship in the Caribbean.

The 1,814-passenger vessel will join four other Celebrity ships already scheduled to sail in Europe in 2010: the Constellation, Equinox, Solstice and Eclipse.

Celebrity had previously announced the Celebrity Century would spend the coming summer sailing 4- and 5-night cruises from Miami -- as it is doing now.

“Celebrity Century’s 4- and 5-night Caribbean vacations are very popular, but our dialogue with our travel partners and guests in North America and Europe indicated even stronger demand for the ship in Europe next summer,” Celebrity’s President & CEO Dan Hanrahan says in a statement.

Holland America Line's Cancellation Protection Plan Allows Cancellation For Any Reason

Holland America Line guests who purchase the line's Cancellation Protection Plan (CPP) can cancel their cruise for any reason whatsoever to receive a refund of up to 90 percent of the cruise fare paid. Two variations of the plan allow cancellation of a cruise up to 24 hours prior to the cruise or cruisetour departure for Standard CPP and right up to departure for CPP Platinum.

"With Holland America Line's Cancellation Protection Plans, guests can rest assured they don't have to have specific reasons to be protected," said Richard D. Meadows, CTC, executive vice president, marketing, sales and guest programs. "It provides added peace of mind in today's environment to know that whatever might be affecting a guest's travel plans, they can receive a refund if needed."

Oasis shows begin booking

Online reservations for shows aboard Oasis of the Seas opened 9/3. Passengers can book productions like ‘Hairspray’ in the Opal Theater, ice shows in Studio B and the afternoon comedy dive show ‘Splish Splash’ in the AquaTheater as early as three months prior to sailing.

All shows aboard Oasis will be free, and reservations guarantee entry on a first-come, first-served basis but not a specific seat, said Charly McDonald, Royal Caribbean International’s manager of guest activities and entertainment technical operations.

Those who book ahead at www.royalcaribbean.com will have their reservations recorded on their SeaPass cards so when they arrive at a show, the pass will be scanned and they can walk right in.

Reservations for shows are not required. If passengers without bookings aren’t able to get in to a particular performance, they can use their SeaPass at an on-site ‘box office’ to reserve a spot at a later show.

The 15-minute nighttime shows will feature choreographed lasers projecting patterns of blue, red and green set to music by artists like Styx, Rush, Van Halen, Boston and Pink Floyd. Smoke machines will be used to enhance the laser light effects.

Princess ship initiates cold ironing in Vancouver

Island Princess on 9/1 helped inaugurate Port Metro Vancouver’s new shore power facility by turning off its engines and plugging in to clean hydroelectric power from shore.

The new technology at Canada Place enables Princess Cruises and Holland America Line ships, and other equipped vessels, to use power from the city’s grid instead of their diesel engines, reducing emissions when alongside.

The new shore power installation is the first use of the technology in Canada and results from a $9m cooperation among Port Metro Vancouver, Transport Canada, Western Economic Diversification Canada, British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, British Columbia Hydro, HAL and Princess.
