What about the hurricanes?  Most of our clients are pretty savvy cruisers, and already know the answers, but when we do receive questions about hurricanes, we recommend travel insurance and explain the benefits of being on a cruise versus a land vacation, as a ship can alter its course.  If you are in a resort, you are stuck.  The resort can't move!

"Sophisticated hurricane tracking models have given our ships ample time to adjust itineraries to avoid these storm systems," says Carnival Corp. board member Bob Dickinson.

Galveston Update:  The Carnival Conquest and Carnival Ecstasy were both scheduled to return to Galveston this past weekend. Of course that was not possible, so they are heading to New Orleans instead. (Carnival kept the Conquest at Cozumel, MX while Hurricane Ike was moving through the Gulf of Mexico, keeping everybody safe and dry). We applaud Carnival for the way they have handled this situation.  Of course the Sept. 14th Conquest and Sept. 15th Ecstasy sailings have been cancelled.  If you would like to read the details on how all of this is being handled  CLICK HERE.

HAL Sets New $200M Investment in Signature

At a recent press conference aboard Holland America Line's inaugural US sailing of the Eurodam, Stein Kruse, president and CEO, and Richard D. Meadows, executive vice president, marketing, sales and guest programs, made it very clear that the line's Signature of Excellence initiative has evolved into something more than just another program.

"Signature of Excellence is a very important part of who we are," Meadows said. "It's long-term, a brand promise."

MSC Poised to Sell Rhapsody

MSC Cruises has confirmed  that it is negotiating the sale of its 1977-built MSC Rhapsody. According to reports Israeli-based Mano Maritime is an interested purchaser.

If the Rhapsody is sold, it will leave the MSC fleet by the end of 2009. Prior to leaving it will continue to operate according to the published 2008/09 schedule, which entails seven-night Western Mediterranean cruises from Genoa this month. On Oct. 4, 2008, the ship is scheduled to depart Genoa on a repositioning cruise to South Africa.    The Rhapsody is the oldest and smallest ship in the MSC fleet.

Carnival to Reopen Grand Turk Cruise Center Oct. 8

The Grand Turk Cruise Center, operated by Miami-based Carnival Corporation  on the island of Grand Turk, has scheduled an Oct. 8, 2008 reopening date, following Hurricane Ike.

An engineering survey has confirmed that no damage was sustained to the cruise ship pier, which can accommodate up to two ships at one time. Minimal damage occurred to the facility's retail and restaurant complex.

cruiseman contest - Win a free 2 night cruise* !!!

Last Time's Question:

Name the ship that Carnival is moving to New Orleans next year

Answer:    The Triumph

Here are our two winners

Diane Parham  -- Stovall, NC
Becky Kopf  -- Mc Sherrystown, PA

This weeks Cruiseman Contest Question:

For this one you may guess or actually look it up:

Cruise Ships are always rated by their "GRT" or "Gross Registered Tonnage"

Examples:
Carnival Glory -- 110,000 grt.
Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas --  160,000 grt.
Celebrity Constellation -- 91,000 grt

Does Gross Registered Tonnage refer to:

1. How much the ship weighs
2. How wide the ship is
3. How long the ship is
4. How much space the ship takes up
5. How many buffets the ship has
6. How much all the passengers weigh

One guess only, please!

We will select two winners.  Each winner will receive a certificate good for Free Cancellation Insurance for their next cruise booked with The Cruiseman!  Good Luck!  If you are listed as a winner,  you don't need to call or write.  We will mail your certificate out to you in the mail.
