TIP OF THE WEEK

Tip of the Week:

Re: tip of the week to keep copies of all important papers, including social security, in luggage, is a real problem if that luggage is stolen as mine was at the termini in Rome last October.  Would not advise it.   --   Gayle

Cruiseman news

Passenger Jumps from Norwegian Star

A woman passenger is believed to have jumped overboard from Norwegian Star the evening of Oct 11th as it was sailing away from Cabo San Lucas on the last leg of an 8-night cruise round trip from Los Angeles.

Short-Lived Disruption for NCL in Hawaii

When the earthquake rumbled through Hawaii last Sunday morning, what affected NCL's sizable fleet there was more the resulting airline snarl-up than the earthquake or damage.  The fleet and the passengers are safe, as you would expect.

Oceania Cruises cancels spring sailing with Libya call

Oceania Cruises has replaced its previously scheduled April 17 voyage that included Libya with a Barcelona to Athens itinerary that commences the Regatta's 2007 Europe season.

Called the Epicurean Odyssey, it will be hosted by chef Jacques Pepin, and will combine destinations in Italy, Spain and Greece, and include four maiden calls: Mahon, on Spain's island of Minorca; Porto Cervo, in Sardinia, and La Spezia, Italy; and Monemvasia, Greece, near the UNESCO World Heritage site of Epidaurus.

The original 11-day itinerary also sailed from Barcelona to Athens and called in Mahon and Monemvasia, but included additional stops in Greece, Italy, Libya and Tunisia.

Libya recently denied entry to Americans on a Silversea cruise vessel.

NY gallery to show Carnival Freedom art

Months before the Carnival Freedom’s March debut in Venice, watercolors and pencil studies of nine murals commissioned for the 110,000gt vessel will be displayed at Manhattan’s Flomenhaft Gallery.

The works are part of a six-week exhibit of figurative oil paintings and sculptures entitled ‘Women Warriors: The Yin and Yang’ by Massachusetts-based artist Joan Barber, who is among several artists responsible for creating the multimillion-dollar art collection aboard the new 2,974-passenger vessel.

Ambassadors acquires Columbia Queen

Ambassadors Cruise Group acquired the 150-passenger Columbia Queen, following the earlier assumption of the laid-up paddlewheeler’s mortgage. Terms were not disclosed.

‘We are pleased to add a seventh U.S.-flagged cruise vessel to our Majestic America Line fleet,’ said David Giersdorf, president of Ambassadors Cruise Group. He said the vessel will operate on the Columbia and Snake rivers starting in Summer 2007.

RCI schedules Australia/NZ sailings

Royal Caribbean International’s Rhapsody of the Seas will sail a series of new itineraries to the South Pacific, Australia and New Zealand as the ship heads for its recently announced Far East deployment.   Three of the five new itineraries on Rhapsody, sailing Sept. 28, Oct. 15 and Nov. 24, 2007, have been chartered.

With ships returning to the Big Easy, will passenger levels follow?

New Orleans is heralding the return of cruise ships over the next few months, as three ships will make the Crescent City a home port, but booking levels appear to be patchy, and many passengers are bypassing Bourbon Street and Creole fare.

The Norwegian Sun on Oct. 15 was slated to make the first cruise departure from New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina devastated the city in 2005 and will embark on a seven-day trip to the western Caribbean from the new Erato Street Terminal.

Carnival Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean vessels are soon to follow, and Princess will make a short appearance in December, as well.

Seabourn places order for two new ships

Seabourn Cruise Line ordered two new ships for delivery in spring 2009 and 2010, representing the small-ship, luxury line's first new ship order in more than 15 years.

The line signed a letter of intent with shipbuilder T. Mariotti of Genoa, Italy, for an all-in cost of $250 million each. The two 32,000-ton, 450-passenger ships would more than double Seabourn's current capacity of 634 berths.

The two new ships would be all-suite vessels, and 90% of the suites in the new vessels would have full-size balconies, a feature most Seabourn accommodations now lack.

Norwegian Pearl nearing completion at German yard

The Norwegian Pearl left the Meyer Werft covered building dock in Papenburg, Germany, on Oct. 15 after completing extensive tests and engine trials, Norwegian Cruise Line said. The Norwegian Pearl will remain at the Meyer Werft yard in Papenburg at an outfitting pier for the remaining work to be completed.

The 93,500-ton ship is scheduled to transit the Ems River to the Dutch port of Eemshaven on Nov. 4 for sea trials, and then make its way to Miami for a Dec.16 inaugural sailing.

The Norwegian Pearl will sail nine-day Southern Caribbean and five-day Western Caribbean itineraries roundtrip from Miami through April 2007, and will then reposition to Alaska to sail seven-day itineraries roundtrip from Seattle for the summer before returning to Miami in September for the remainder of the year.
