The North American cruise industry's economic impact in the United States grew by more than 6% in 2007, creating more than 350,000 jobs while generating $38 billion in total economic output, according to a study by CLIA.

CLIA also reported that from Jan. to June, the cruise industry saw an overall 5.43% increase in passengers worldwide, with occupancies at almost 105%.

Don't forget to check The Cruiseman Web Site during the weeks that there is no Cruiseman Newsletter.  If you had checked last week you would have seen a week-long extended Happy Hour promotions with RCCL & Celebrity, and a great one-day sale with Carnival.

Tomorrow

Don't forget to vote tomorrow.  The rule is that if you don't vote you don't get to complain for four years!  It is a real disgrace how many US citizens don't bother to vote in our national elections.  Think about the Iraqi people with their purple thumbs proudly displayed, and excited that they can finally vote in free elections in their country.  I think we have become spoiled.

Cruiseman Funnies

~ Why do people who know the least know it the loudest?
~ Why do they lock gas station bathrooms? Are they afraid that someone will clean them?
~ Why do they make scented toilet paper?
~ Why do we say something is out of whack? What is a whack?
~ Why does Sea World have a seafood restaurant? I'm halfway through my fishburger and I realize, Oh my, I could be eating a slow learner.
~ Why is it that when we talk to God we're said to be praying, but when God talks to us we're schizophrenic?
~ Why is the alphabet in that order? Is it because of that song?
~ Why is there an expiration date on my sour cream container?

Things To Know Before You Go

How much cash will I need  onboard the ship?

Actually none! The cruise ships use a cashless system. Your Sail and Sign card is tied to your shipboard account. All purchases you make onboard the ship are put on your shipboard account. Usually this has been linked to your credit card prior to boarding.

Worldwide Destinations: Central America & The Panama Canal

The warm region between Mexico and South America possesses remarkable culture, spectacular scenery - and one of the world's historic engineering marvels, the Panama Canal. Lush tropical rain forests and abundant colorful wildlife make Central America a prime cruise destination for people seeking places off the beaten path and close to nature.

Although a few of today's largest cruise ships can not pass through the locks of the Panama Canal, most major cruise lines offer sailings that include this unique passage along with visits to several Central American and Caribbean ports of call. A day-long passage through the 51-mile-long canal transits three locks and passes through some of the region's most beautiful scenery.

Some lines operate Central American/Panama Canal cruises throughout the year, but September through April is the most popular season for these itineraries. Many Panama Canal cruises last from 10 to 25 days or more, though some are as short as a week. Repositioning voyages between the Atlantic and Caribbean waters and the Pacific and Alaska also usually go through the Panama Canal and include Central America visits, as do many world cruise itineraries.

Call our office for more information on Panama Canal Cruises.

Royal Caribbean Cruises to End Fuel Supplement

Royal said that its decision takes into consideration the recent reductions in global fuel prices. The company has also established specific guidelines that will determine whether fuel supplement refunds will be provided for sailings that begin in 2009 and later, which were booked prior to Nov. 10, if fuel prices remain below a specific price threshold.

More cruise ships will visit Panama

The cruise ships visiting the country have steadily increased and the new home port will make Panama an attractive destination

Panama Star Since Panama signed an agreement with cruise ships companies, which are members of the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association in October 2000, the arrival of passengers to the Panamanian ports of Gatun, Colon 2000, Cristobal, Balboa, Fuerte Amador and Kuna Yala has increased, which confirm the status of the country as an established tourist destination.

Carnival Cruise Lines announced that a new branding campaign will debut this month under the tagline "Fun For All. All For Fun." The new campaign will kick off with special events featuring Guinness World Record attempts in Dallas and Philadelphia.

The first event, in Dallas yesterday, involved setting a Guinness record for the world's largest beach ball. The second event, to take place in Philadelphia on Nov. 2, will feature a Guinness attempt for the world's largest piñata. Royal Caribbean pulls cruise ship from South America; expands in San Diego

Add Royal Caribbean to the list of cruise lines moving ships closer to home.  The line says it is canceling cruises in South America planned for the 2,501-passenger Radiance of the Seas in 2009 and 2010 and instead keeping the ship in San Diego.

The line says the 90,000-ton vessel will sail 24 additional Mexican Riviera sailings between September 2009 and May 2010 ranging in length from four- to 12-night.

Ports of call on the voyages include Acapulco, Cabo San Lucas, Ensenada, Huatulco, Ixtapa (Zihuatanejo), Manzanillo, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta.

River cruise operator Majestic America Line to shut down

The parent company of Majestic America Line will "wind down the business" over the next few weeks as its seven river boats finish their 2008 seasons.

Ambassadors International has been trying to sell the money-losing operator of the famed Delta Queen steamboat for several months but has been unsuccessful and has decided to pull the plug, executives said.

One of Majestic's boats, the Empress of the North, already has been taken over by the U.S. Maritime Administration due to unpaid debt. Another indebted vessel, the 436-passenger American Queen also is likely to end up in the hands of the government soon, Ambassadors CEO Joe Ueberroth said during the conference call.

The company's five other boats, which Ambassadors owns debt free, will be pulled out of the water and put in long-term storage.

"In hindsight . . . I acknowledge that no matter how well structured or how little capital was required, our investment in the domestic river boat business was a very bad investment," Ueberroth said.
