From your editor

Dear Readers:

Did you notice?  On the Today Show's broadcast from the Freedom of the Seas, they were talking about the GRT of the Freedom and discussing how much she weighs. Regular readers of The Cruiseman Newsletter know better. Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT), has nothing to do with weight. It has to do with the measure of space inside a ship.

Let's see how smart you are today.  Can you tell us how GRT is calculated?  It's really quite simple.  CLICK HERE and give it a stab.

Relax or Play?   We want to thank everybody that voted in our poll last week. About 90% of those responding said they go on a cruise to relax. The others said that they go for activities or for both.

Here was our best reply:  "We do a little of each when we are on a cruise.  That is one of the greatest parts of being on a cruise it is not the playing or relaxing but the fact that you have a choice to play or relax and it is so easy to do which ever you decide to do."    Vicky Morris
Thanks, Vicky.  We ought to put you on the payroll doing commercials!!!  :)

Speaking of relaxing, don't miss the article below about "The Sanctuary" on the Crown Princess.

Referrals We Love!  Like most businesses, The Cruiseman thrives on referrals. This week we are looking for Family Reunions.  If you give us a referral that turns into a family reunion cruise, we will make it well worth your while! ($$)  Give us a call!

From The Mailbag:

After having called three other agents, I found working with Jim to be a huge relief.  He knew what he was talking about, had answers to my questions that other agents didn't, and everything went incredibly smoothly.  And I could understand his English!  I have one answer to the question, "Who should I book my cruise with?" The "Man"!   -- Robin Zaft, Midway, Utah

tip of the week

Tip of the Week:

Forget your address book! Just bring along pre-printed labels for everyone to whom you wish to send post cards.  It's much easier and handier and you'll know that you haven't forgotten anyone (or sent the same person twice) when you run out of labels.

--  Connie Lipman;  Rye Brook, NY

Think you can do better?

New on Crown Princess: 'The Sanctuary’

When Crown Princess begins sailing on June 14, the ship will offer an outdoor spa-inspired retreat on the uppermost forward deck. Princess Cruises said ‘The Sanctuary’ will provide signature beverages, light meals, massages and relaxing personal entertainment.

‘Serenity Stewards’ will be on hand to offer chilled face towels and Evian water atomizers and serve a light menu with choices like fruit skewers and lettuce-wrapped spring rolls, with beverages ranging from smoothies to fresh lemonade. The stewards also will rent MP3 players with noise canceling headphones loaded with themed playlists focused on relaxation.

Lotus Spa Services will be available at two private outdoor cabanas. Also, massage therapists will offer shorter back, shoulder and neck massages using special massage chairs.

The area is furnished with double loungers for couples, deluxe chaise lounges and chairs. Sunset yoga sessions will be offered. There is no charge to use The Sanctuary, located on Deck 17, adjacent to the Lotus Spa. Capacity is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Major renovation for Majesty of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International’s Majesty of the Seas will undergo an extensive refurbishment beginning on Jan. 12. The 2,356-passenger ship will gain expanded spa and fitness facilities, additional dining options, refurbished staterooms and refreshed public areas.

A more contemporary ShipShape Fitness Center and Spa will be relocated to Deck 9. Public and entertainment areas will receive a facelift, including Casino Royale, which will get new carpets, window coverings and upholstery plus a refurbished bar.

Johnny Rockets and Sorrento’s Italian pizzeria will become additional dining options. The Windjammer Café, the Mikado and Maytime dining rooms, and the Schooner Bar will be revitalized, with upgrades in carpeting, chairs, window coverings and décor.

Staterooms will feature the line’s new upgraded bedding.

Renovations will be completed in time for Majesty of the Seas to resume three- and four-night sailings from Miami to CocoCay and Nassau on Feb. 9.

The perks are available to ‘Platinum’ cardholders who have sailed aboard the Fun Ships 10 or more times.

Crown Princess gets a godmother

Martha Stewart has been selected to serve as the godmother for Crown Princess. She will name the ship at New York’s Brooklyn Cruise Terminal during a June 14 ceremony.

The naming will be the first at the Brooklyn facility. That same evening the 3,080-berth Crown Princess will sail on its maiden voyage, kicking off a summer season of roundtrip nine-day Caribbean cruises.

Man went overboard after drinking

After an investigation and review of security tapes, the FBI and U.S. Coast Guard told the family of the man missing from Mariner of the Seas that he went overboard at 2:16 a.m. Monday and that he was alone at the time.

Five FBI agents and four USCG officers conducted the investigation aboard the ship in St. Thomas, interviewing the man’s six traveling companions and other passengers and crew, and reviewing video tapes that captured the man on deck.

Carnival: Cozumel pier will take time

It could be as much as a two-year project to rebuild the Carnival Corp. pier in Cozumel, chairman Micky Arison said. Carnival’s Puerta Maya facility was destroyed during Hurricane Wilma last year, forcing Carnival-family ships to tender in passengers.

Celebrity, RCI to resume Cartagena calls

Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean International will resume calls to Cartagena starting in April 2007. The news follows a meeting in Cartagena between Colombian President Alvaro Uribe Velez and Royal Caribbean chairman and ceo Richard Fain.   The company last sent ships to Cartagena in 2002.

Norwegian Sun to assume Fanning Island route

NCL Corp. extended its relationship with the Republic of Kiribati, enabling the company to continue to offer Fanning Island on its long Hawaii cruises through to 2011 and to expand capacity by replacing Norwegian Wind with the newer, larger Norwegian Sun.

Beginning in September 2007, Norwegian Sun will operate 10- and 11-day itineraries from Honolulu with a stop at Fanning Island. Norwegian Wind will transfer to the Star Cruises fleet in late April 2007.

The addition of Norwegian Sun, along with the new Pride of Hawaii, completes the Norwegian Cruise Line brand and NCL America brand Hawaii fleets and will bring NCL’s total Hawaii capacity to more than 8,500 lower berths.

By deploying the 2,000-passenger Norwegian Sun on the Fanning Island itinerary, NCL expects to carry some 450,000 passengers to Hawaii in 2007.

Harwich handles first Costa call

Harwich International Port received a record number of passengers on a single call May 19th (Friday) when the 105,000grt Costa Magica arrived with nearly 2,400 cruisers.

The port had less than 24 hours’ notice the ship was on the way. The call was changed from Dover at the last minute due to weather conditions. Costa Magica was berthed at Harwich from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The visit is the first to Harwich by Costa Cruises and was seen as an opportunity to showcase the area.
