From your editor

Dear Readers:

From the "You gotta be kidding me" Dept.  This week we saw another one of those big ads recruiting people to get rich selling travel from their kitchen table. You know the ones. This one was well over 1/2 page in our local newspaper. (These ads are run nationally by several outfits.)  Anyway, this particular ads tells all about how "Jennifer" is making all this money selling travel to her friends. The ad had a web site at the bottom, so I thought I'd check it out. The web site didn't work.  I did find another web site for the same company. After digging through the fine print, I finally got to the bottom line.  They want you to pay them $495 to "register" as an agent, and they also expect you to pay them monthly fees, too!  Now let's see... they run these ads nationally, so you know they are expecting a big response.  Let's say 5000 people respond and cough up $495 each.  Do the math.... that's $2,475,000.  Yep. almost 2 1/2 million bucks, just signing people up

But, you do get an "Official ID Card" !!!

I hope you can see that these outfits don't care if you ever sell a bit of travel or not. If they never hear from you again it's OK with them. They have cashed in "registering" people.  Nice gig,  huh?

Here at The Cruiseman, we do things quite differently. Yes, we do have a great Outside Agents Program, and we have some agents that do quite well at it. But here's the big difference. We don't charge you to sell cruises, we pay you!!
(We have a modest annual support fee, to help cover some expenses)

If you'd like to make some honest money with an honest company CLICK HERE.  (We only accept experienced cruisers, for obvious reasons)

Play or Relax?   This question has come up lately several times; Do people take vacations so that they can take part in lots of activities and do things they can't do at home, or do they take vacations so they can just relax?  Which best describes you?  Play or Relax.  CLICK HERE and then tell us which one you are.  We'll report the results next week here in The Cruiseman Newsletter.

Tuesday Happy Hour.   CLICK HERE

Referrals We Love!  Like most businesses, The Cruiseman thrives on referrals. This week we are looking for Fraternal Organizations.  We would like to put together group travel for Fraternal Organizations. We will need to speak with a key contact person. If you give us a referral that turns into a group, we will make it well worth your while!  Give us a call!

From The Mailbag:   I wanted to  say that we enjoyed our cruise on Legend of the Seas very much. I know that this  sounds weird but we had confidence in you as our cruise consultant and that  really helped. Our previous cruise was a complete disaster, made worse that our  travel agent could have cared less. It is obvious that you have a passion for what you do and that, matched with expertise is a formula for success for both  you and your customers.
Thanks, Jeff Taylor  -- Glenwood, MD

tip of the week

Tip of the Week:

I always bring along post-its notes. I put them on the door to let my traveling companions know where I've run off to and when I expect to return. They also come in handy to let the steward know what extras I need or things I want done.  --  Colleen Gallagher,  Armonk NY

Think you can do better?

Send us your "Tip of the Week". If yours is selected for the newsletter, you won't win a prize, but we will make you famous and that will impress all your friends! To submit your "Tip of the Week" CLICK HERE.   Please give us your name and city so we can give you proper credit. Please keep it brief!

NCL's Norway headed for scrap yard

A 46-year-old ship -- most notably known as Norwegian Cruise Line’s ship the Norway  also known as the Blue Lady and the France -- is now headed for a scrap yard in India.

The ship had quite a history. It has been out of service since a 2003 boiler room explosion onboard killed eight crewmembers. Prior to that, the vessel sailed as the Norway, serving the Caribbean for more than 20 years, beginning in 1979.

It started out as a transatlantic liner, the France, launched by a French shipping company in 1962.

Celebrity Cruises' Mercury heading Down Under in 2007

Celebrity Cruises will sail in Australia and New Zealand for the first time beginning in December 2007.

At an event in New York May 11, Celebrity President Dan Hanrahan said the Celebrity Mercury will operate six 15-day sailings between Auckland, New Zealand, and Sydney from December 2007 to March 2008.

Regent plots 59-night S. America voyage

Thirty-six ports in 15 countries are on tap for Seven Seas Mariner’s 59-night ‘Circle South America’ voyage in 2007. The all-balcony-suite ship will operate roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale, sailing on Jan. 9.

Six overnights in port and seven complimentary shoreside events are planned. Jean-Michel Cousteau will be aboard as a guest lecturer during the Amazon segment with representatives of his Ocean Futures Society.

Segments of 11 to 19 nights are offered. Passengers can extend the trip into a 73-night program by embarking in Los Angeles on Dec. 26 for a trans-canal holiday cruise prior to the South America voyage.

Insignia completes major upgrade

Oceania Cruises’ Insignia completed a multimillion-dollar refurbishment in France. The 10-day project was timed prior to the start of the ship’s European season.

Insignia now sports eight private cabanas with Balinese sun beds and a poolside al fresco lounge, The Patio – both concepts introduced by younger sister Nautica late last year.

Tandem transatlantic crossing planned for Queen Victoria and QE2

Cunard's new liner Queen Victoria, delivering next December, will embark on her 106-night maiden World Cruise out of Southampton on the same day in January 2008 as QE2 leaves for a 103-night 'South America, Pacific and Orient Odyssey' voyage.

Both ships will leave Southampton on Sunday January 6, 2008, but follow very different routes. The two will head for New York on the first-ever tandem westbound Transatlantic crossing. QE2, making her 804th Atlantic crossing, will escort Queen Victoria, making her first, with both arriving in New York a week later. They then continue together, reaching Fort Lauderdale two days later. From there the ships will take different courses before a further 'Meeting of the Queens' in Sydney on February 24.
