From your editor

Dear Readers:

Free Advice Department: Concerning rates for summer & fall 2006 ...  The Caribbean ships are not filling up as fast this year as the cruise lines had anticipated, so they are dealing on some dates. However rather than just drop rates across the board, they are "hiding" the deals with Residents Rates, Senior Rates, Past Passenger Rates, Happy Hours, discounted airfare and the like. So, when you call or email us for a rate, be sure to let us know anything that might qualify you for one of these special deals.  Now, here's the catch.  The cruise lines will only run these specials until they are satisfied with booking volume.  When bookings are back up, they will drop the deals, and go back to the "regular rates", so the time to book is now!  You snooze, you loose!

Marriage Enrichment Cruise.  Okay, I apologize to those that replied to this last week.  The link went to a non-working email address. My bad! If you replied last week, please do it again now.  Thank You.

Several have requested that we put together a Marriage Enrichment Cruise for Christian couples.  We would like to know how many might be interested.  If you have the slightest interest in a Christian Marriage Enrichment Cruise, please CLICK HERE.  If response is good enough and we proceed, we will send you information on the cruise.  It might be possible that we could offer Pastors a free berth.  Let's see who's interested.

Happy Hour is back this week.  CLICK HERE to see the deals!

Letters we love:     Outstanding!!! I have booked several cruises with Jim and have had excellent service. For the second time in 3 years we were forced to cancel and rebook a cruise and received  prompt professional service.  Bobbie Bruegel,  Demmit, TX

Office Closed.  Our office will close around noon this Friday for the weekend. Your editor is taking Mrs. Cruiseman to Branson for our wedding anniversary. We'll be back in the office on Monday.  See you then!

tip of the week

Tip of the Week:

We always pack a small to mid size collapsible cooler and either use it as a piece of luggage, or fold it down and put it in a suitcase. Then in the morning before we get off the boat we order sandwiches and other items from room service, have our cabin steward get us ice and we're set for the day. We also bring bottled water, so all this helps in two ways, we don't have to worry about safety of our food, and we save money by not having to buy food while we're off on our excursions.

Carnival Glory updates western Caribbean itinerary

The Carnival Glory recently began a new four-port, seven-day itinerary, part of the ship’s alternating week-long eastern and western Caribbean cruise schedule from Port Canaveral, Fla.

The Glory’s western Caribbean cruises features extended day-long visits to four tropical destinations -- Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico; Nassau, Bahamas; and Belize City, Belize. The ship’s western route previously called in Key West, Fla., Belize and Costa Maya.

“Glory’s new seven-day Caribbean itinerary combines two of cruising’s most popular destinations -- Cozumel and Nassau -- with two of the newest -- Belize and Costa Maya,” said Bob Dickinson, Carnival president and CEO. “Ports included on this one-of-a-kind program not only feature excellent shopping, dining and water sports but archeological ruins and eco-tourism opportunities, not to mention some of the world’s best beaches,” he continued.

Carnival Glory’s new western Caribbean itinerary from Port Canaveral began May 20 and will and alternate each week with the ship’s seven-day eastern Caribbean cruises to Nassau, St. Thomas and St. Maarten.

Oceania to revisit Libya with 'cautious optimism' in 2007

Like Muammar al-Qaddafi himself, Oceania Cruises has had a change of heart, revealing that it will once again feature sailings with calls in Libya beginning in April 2007.

As part of its “Roman Revelations” cruise from Barcelona, Spain, a voyage that visits historical and cultural destinations in the Mediterranean, the sailing will feature two calls in Libya, at Tripoli and Benghazi.

Oceania stated in February that it canceled its three remaining voyages to Libya this year and that it would not consider going back, citing “ too many uncertainties and headaches,” according to Tim Rubacky, director of corporate communications for Oceania, in February.

The line clearly rethought its position, coinciding with the recent announcement by the U.S. State Dept. that it would resume diplomatic relations with Libya.

Passenger appears to have jumped from Carnival Legend

Carnival Cruise Lines has confirmed that a 35 year-old male passenger is reported to have jumped overboard from the Carnival Legend as it sailed from Tortola to New York early Sunday morning and that the ship’s command initiated search and rescue activities.

Petty Officer Christopher Evanson of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Atlantic Area Public Affairs office said the man had reportedly argued with his wife and two young children before leaping off the sixth floor balcony in their stateroom, in front of his family.

Evanson said the Coast Guard received notification from Carnival shortly after the incident and launched a C-130 search airplane from Clearwater, Fla., and conducted a search until 6:00 pm Sunday. At that time the search was suspended and the Coast Guard ordered the Carnival Legend to continue on to New York.

Carnival said the vessel arrived in New York on May 28, at approximately 7:45 p.m., 12 hours behind schedule. Efforts were made to contact all guests scheduled to sail on the next voyage to advise them of the ship’s departure delay, the line said.

A spectacular day in Kiel

June 6th:  Germany's Port of Kiel welcomed the maiden calls of both MSC Lirica and Costa Classica yesterday. Apart from the two newcomers, Hapag Lloyd's C. Columbus as well as the ferries Kronprins Harald and Stena Scandinavica were in port.

As a result for the first time in its history the Port of Kiel handled more than 10,000 passengers on one day, of which some 6,000 were cruise visitors. About 1,300 guests embarking MSC Lirica were German travel agents departing on a cruise to Copenhagen.

Costa Concordia installs Grand Prix racer

A Grand Prix car driving simulator was installed today on board Costa Concordia, which is in the final stages of fitting-out at Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente shipyard.

The simulator recreates the feel of driving a Grand Prix car at speeds of almost 350 km/h. Passengers behind the wheel will be able to record their performance and compete in a virtual Grand Prix as they race against the clock.

The simulator is located on one of the 112,000gt ship’s highest decks, 50 meters above the sea. The attraction results from real-time vehicle modeling, the same technology used by Grand Prix champion drivers in training.

Emerald Princess launched

June 1st:  Emerald Princess, delivering in spring 2007, was launched this morning at Fincantieri's Monfalcone yard. The 113,000gt Princess Cruises ship will be floated out of the dock by midday tomorrow, reports the builder.

Room with a view

Occupants of the cabin (6305) directly above the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream parlor on Freedom of the Seas get a special treat – free ice cream for the cruise.

The perk aims to compensate for the fact that the cabin’s view of the Royal Promenade is partially blocked by the rumps of two giant Holstein cows. The cows are the symbol of Ben & Jerry’s.

‘It’s the only stateroom in the fleet that has special privileges,’ said Adam Goldstein, president of Royal Caribbean International.

Century completes $55m refit

Celebrity Cruises’ Century re-entered service today in Barcelona after a $55m makeover at Fincantieri’s Palermo shipyard. Celebrity president Dan Hanrahan called the project ‘miraculous, technically and otherwise -- particularly the veranda program.’

A total of 314 verandas were added during the five-week drydock, the most extensive refurbishment ever undertaken by Celebrity. Also, it was the largest cruise ship modification completed by the Italian yard.

In addition to the verandas, the work included adding 14 suites and 10 staterooms, ranging from inside to veranda categories. The number of ConciergeClass category accommodations was expanded.

The 1995-built Century gained a specialty restaurant, Murano, decorated with chandeliers of Murano glass. The menu was designed by culinary consultant Michel Roux, and service and cuisine will follow the style of Celebrity’s Millennium-class specialty dining venues. Among a host of of other food and beverage changes, Century’s two-level Grand Restaurant was fully refurbished, and a casual, 76-seat Sushi Bar was added to the list of dining spots.

Century debuts Celebrity’s new bedding

Celebrity Cruises becomes the latest brand to move to more deluxe bedding, with premium mattresses, 100-percent Egyptian cotton linens, duvets, bed throws and pillow shams. The bedding debuted today on the newly revitalized Century, and will be introduced on board Galaxy and Millennium later this year, and across the balance of the fleet in 2007.
