From your editor

Dear Readers:

When Do I Tip On My Cruise?

When is tipping expected, and exactly how are tips handled on cruise vacations? These are legitimate questions passengers face today, because cruise line policies have changed over the past few years. In the earlier days of cruising, gratuities were extended at the end of the cruise via cash only, with suggested amounts given per staff member per day. Usually this covered waiter and assistant, as well as the cabin steward or stewardess. Gratuities were considered an essential element of staff members' wages. Rather than tipping after each meal, on the last evening of the cruise, tip envelopes were put in passengers' staterooms to be used that evening. One company that did not recommend gratuities amounts back in the 1980s and early 1990s was Holland America Line – gratuities could be extended if the service was exceptional.

Depending on which cruise line you're with, gratuity policies vary wildly. Some charge a specific fee based on the room, others charge a fee and then passengers are able to adjust it and still others simply suggest amounts for each service provided. On average $10 per person, per day will cover your cabin steward, dining room waiter & assistant waiter.

In the new specialty Restaurants the dining fee includes the gratuity on Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Costa, Holland America.  Cunard & Princess believe the guest has already paid restaurant gratuities, so no additional gratuity is required. The surcharge is for the restaurant and not for the service. This is similar with NCL's ships, where the "service fee" covers guests dining regardless of the restaurant selected.  The lone exception is Carnival Cruise Lines' Supper Clubs, where the surcharge of $30pp does not include a gratuity.

Spa services' gratuities also vary.  Costa builds the gratuity into the fee. The same is true for Cunard, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean. Cruise lines whose spa treatments do not automatically include the gratuity include Holland America, Princess, MSC and Carnival. Spa gratuities are left to the passenger's discretion.

Beverage Gratuities.  This area is very standard with an automatic gratuity, usually 15%, added to the bill. This also applies to beverages purchased in specialty restaurants. All major cruise lines have all charges posted to the guest's ship-board account, which is settled at the end of the cruise.

Convenience as well as creating simplicity and a hassle-free environment are the key reasons cruise lines have made major changes to their gratuity and tipping policies.

"We told you so" Department  Two weeks ago in an article about discounted cruises, we said:   The cruise lines will only run these specials until they are satisfied with booking volume.  When bookings are back up, they will drop the deals, and go back to the "regular rates", so the time to book is now!  You snooze, you loose!

Today we read the following announcement:  "Carnival  indicated further aggressive pricing action is probably not needed and bookings softness remains limited to the Caribbean. Recent Caribbean pricing reductions are filling remaining unsold 2006 inventory."   Translation: Prices are not going any lower, and will start climbing very soon.  Book now or pay more later.

Carnival Cruise Lines & The Cruiseman will host a ONE DAY SALE on Thursday, June 22nd, 2006&ldots;  This promotion will offer Best Available Upgrades on most ships and sail dates through February 11, 2007.  We should have the details up on The Cruiseman Web Site Wednesday.  Check then for the details.

Try Galveston!  WOW- I love Galveston!   I was in Galveston about 6 years ago and thought it was a charming town.   I just returned and am convinced it is one of the very best hidden secrets of embarkation ports!    There is so much to do in Galveston;   charming hotels, great sightseeing, unique shopping, charming restaurants, pretty beaches,  horse drawn carriage rides, Victorian homes,  water parks and more! -- Ann Sedgwick.  CLICK HERE for some cruise options from Galveston.

Speaking of Galveston, we still have some space on our Feb. 4th sailing on the Carnival Conquest.  This is a group deal, so the rates are locked in, and each cabin gets a $50 on-board credit, plus some other good things.   CLICK HERE for details on this great cruise. Your editor, and Mrs. Cruiseman will be on board and we look forward to meeting you.

Happy Hour  looks good this week.  CLICK HERE to see the deals!

Costa on Sale.  We have a great promotion this week with Costa Cruise Line that includes free upgrades.  CLICK HERE for the details.

Letters we love:   I was very pleased with Mr. Antista and his company.  He was more than helpful with everything we needed and had questions about.  He made our first cruise/honeymoon experience very memorable.
-- Alisha Aanes, Springfield, MO

Fair Tax.  The Cruiseman strongly supports the Fair Tax.  We find that the only people that are opposed to it are politicians, lobbyists, and people that do not understand it. CLICK HERE for some details. The Fair Tax will put more cash in your pocket so you can take more cruises!

tip of the week

Tip of the Week:

If you travel a lot you may already do this, but for the ones of you haven't, if you get some really bright yarn and make pom poms, and then tie them to your luggage you can find them faster and keep the mistake of someone else taking one of your pieces of luggage that looks like theirs, this happened to me on my first cruise, she got off way before i did and she didn't read the name tags, so i was left with hers and mine was at the airport. everything worked out in the end. happy travels
-- Melinda Whitson, Highland, MO

Thirty Days; Three New Ships

With the delivery of the Crown Princess in Brooklyn this week, the industry completes a hat trick--three flawless ship deliveries in North America over a period of less than a month starting with Freedom of the Seas, then Pride of Hawai'i, and now Crown.

Not only is the hardware of the three distinctive, but so was the choice of godmothers, with the foster mother of hundreds of children as godmother of Freedom and Princess' surprising pick of Martha Stewart as godmother of Crown. In-between, the first male to christen a cruise ship: Sen. Inouye of Hawaii for the Pride of Hawai'i.

On the Crown this week, agents were not only taken in by the sophisticated beauty of the ship, but they were oohing and aahing over the spectacular unimpeded views of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline the ship afforded while docking in the port of Brooklyn. Guests could also easily view a Royal Caribbean vessel in nearby Cape Liberty. Staterooms on the Crown's starboard side afforded the best  views, but the highlights were easily viewed in the main public areas.

As for the inside of the ship, agents gave particular praise to the atrium, saying it was Princess' best, with its heightened  activity level, swirling spiral staircases, and noshing areas. Also noted: some 900 staterooms are adorned with balconies--the second most for a cruise ship (behind the QM2).

Following the hectic delivery period of the last thirty days, the industry takes a breather with no new ships to be christened in North America until next year.

Norfolk, Va., names $36M cruise terminal 'Half Moone'

The new $36 million cruise terminal in Norfolk, Va., was dedicated the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center, Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim said June 12.

The name comes from a 1673 decree that a Norfolk fort be built “in the form of a half moone” to protect the burgeoning maritime history.

Construction on the 33,300-square-foot facility is 40% complete, said Stephen Kirkland, manager of cruise operations for Norfolk. The facility is slated to open in March 2007.

Royal Caribbean’s Empress of the Seas is first ship scheduled to utilize the Half Moone Center, operating eight-day Bermuda sailings from the facility in 2007.

About 90,000 passengers are expected to sail out of Norfolk in total next year, Kirkland said.

HAL All Over Europe in 2007

Holland America Line will undertake its longest European season ever next year, utilizing five ships over nearly nine months beginning with trans-Atlantic crossings starting on March 12, with the last return getting into Fort Lauderdale on November 24.

HAL returns Maasdam, Prinsendam, and Rotterdam to Europe, adds Veendam for the first time, and redeploys Westerdam after a one-year hiatus. Once the ships are in Europe, embarkation/debarkation ports will be: Rome/Civitavecchia, Venice, Athens/Piraeus, Lisbon, London/Harwich (a new turn for HAL), Copenhagen, Rotterdam (how appropriate), and Amsterdam.

Of the 136 ports of call, HAL will introduce 13 maiden stops, some very lightly known, offering guests the chance to explore new ground in ports ranging from Djupivogur, Iceland, to ports in Albania and Slovenia.

Celebrity Cruises Pairs With Food Network for Wedding Special

Celebrity's Infinity has been selected to serve as the platform for "Food Network Caters Your Hawaiian Wedding," a two-hour special that will premiere during the network's "Wedding Weekend" in June 2007. Giada de Laurentiis, star of Everyday Italian, will host the entire event.

Carnival leads Saint John season

Carnival Victory’s arrival today kicks off the cruise season in Saint John, New Brunswick, in a year when the Carnival Cruise Lines vessel will make more calls than any other ship. Sixteen of Saint John’s total 33 calls will be by Carnival Victory, sailing in weekly until Oct. 3.

Carnival has made ‘a significant commitment to developing the cruise market for Saint John as the “anchor in the Bay of Fundy,”’ said Capt. Alwyn Soppitt, president and ceo of the Saint John Port Authority. ‘The opportunity now rests with the community to ensure that cruise guests enjoy our many fine attractions, shops and eateries.’
