What about "the economy"?  We had a call last week from a nice lady that wanted to know if we thought it was a good idea to take a cruise while the economy is "like it is".  This might be the very best time of all to book a cruise and here's why:  The cruise lines are giving us lots of special promotions right now,  such as past passenger rates, senior rates, residents rates, military rates, free upgrade promotions, free onboard credits promotions.

Carnival has it's "Endless Summer Celebration" going this month.  Check back often as the offer will change from week to week.

Royal Caribbean has the largest Happy Hour ever this week! 21 different sailings are "on sale".

Promotions like these are great opportunities to get a great deal on your next cruise vacation. You have worked hard, and you deserve a great vacation!

Would you pay to get into a nightclub on a cruise ship? Norwegian Cruise Line is betting you will. The line announced this week that its next ship will have several exclusive 21+-only, Vegas-style venues that come with a charge.  See the article in your Cruiseman News.

Did you know?   The cruise industry has again showed a tremendous performance, with a record high 17,857,711 passengers taking to the sea for a cruise in 2007. The figure indicates a growth rate of 5.5 per cent over the previous year.

Princess Notification: "Due to the volatility of air prices please be advised that all air prices are subject to change and are not guaranteed until final payment has been received by Princess Cruises."

Cruiseman Funnie

A patient limped into his doctor's office. The doctor handed him a large pill. Just then, the nurse called the doctor out of the room to ask him a question.

While the doctor was gone, the patient hobbled over to the sink, ran some water in a paper cup and swallowed the pill.

Just then the doctor returned with a bucket and said, "Now, drop the pill into the bucket and we'll soak your foot."

Letters We Love

We did all shore excursions on our own and it was significantly cheaper and zero hassle.  Nice ship.  They need to advertise the teen program - we sought it out and it was great but saw no info on it. Very good (service) - have given you two referrals and wouldn't have done that if I was not happy.   Judy Husted   (NCL Pearl 6/1/08)

Oasis of the Seas Update

Royal Caribbean wowed the cruise world with news that its next ship will have a zip line, a first on the high seas.  The company that pioneered rock climbing walls and ice skating rinks on cruise ships says its latest gee-whiz offering will be located at the back of the much-ballyhooed, 5,400-passenger Oasis of the Seas, which sets sail in December 2009.

The largest cruise ship ever built also will have a family-focused amusement area called the Boardwalk that will boast a hand-carved merry-go-round, carnival games and a Coney Island atmosphere -- something that has never been tried before on a cruise ship (see illustration above).

"The fuel surcharges our brands have imposed have not even been close to recapturing the increases," he said. "We are now a global company with 88 ships. This is a much more complex issue for us."

cruiseman contest - Win a free 2 night cruise* !!!

Last Time's Question:

How many cruise lines have gone out of business since 1972?

Answer:   73

This one got more interesting than we anticipated.  We received very few entries. (afraid to take a guess?) Those that did enter weren't even close!  Some did some research and even cited their sources in their entry.  One person guessed "none", but nobody was close at all.

73 is the correct number of defunct cruise brands that were marketed in North America,  since 1972.  These are listed by name in the book "Selling The Seas" by former Carnival President, Bob Dickinson. (pg. 118-119)

Since nobody came even close we are going to forget this one, and try again this week with an easier question, and a new prize.  Ready?
