Funnies
A husband and
his wife were playing Trivia for Dummies when she amazed him by
answering correctly that there are seven rays on the crown of the
Statue of Liberty.
"How in
the world did you know that?" he asked.
Rolling her
eyes, she answered,"Duuuhh...the seven original colonies!"
Tip
of the week
Most cruise lines
charge more for cabins on higher decks. However, that's where you'll
feel the most motion, making the lower decks preferable for those
prone to motion sickness. Regardless of where you are, most ships are
very stable. For the most stability, choose an inside room near the
center of the ship. With so much to do onboard, you probably
won"t spend much time in your cabin anyway. And regardless of
your cabin's price, all passengers enjoy the same food and
entertainment, so consider choosing the least-expensive cabin on a
more expensive ship.

The overall cruise
was absolutely fabulous. Just disappointed we didn't have room
service 24/7. It stopped at 9pm. There is no comparison!
The Cruiseman is wonderful! We even had a person who couldn't
go at the last minute and he was terrific in helping us figure out
what to do! -- Windy Elliott (Mariner of the
Seas 12/28/08)

worldwide destinations -- Transatlantic |
|
For those who value traveling in
style and comfort, for romantic souls who want to experience the
style and grace of the "good old days" (but with all the
modern conveniences) and for who simply want to escape from the
ordinary routine, nothing beats a transatlantic cruise. As short as
six days or as long as two weeks or more, these crossings between
Europe and America feature the endless pleasures of leisurely days at
sea the ship lovers and experienced cruisers treasure, rather than
the usual series of port calls.
Transatlantic cruises once were
the heart of daily commerce across the Atlantic, but today they are
seasonal treats. One cruise line operates a schedule of crossings
through the summer months, but most other transatlantic sailings
occur with the migrations of cruise fleets from the Caribbean to
Europe and the Mediterranean in the spring and the return voyages in
the fall.
Eastbound crossings frequently
depart from New York, Boston, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and a few
Caribbean ports. Westbound ships often sail from Southampton,
England; Barcelona, Spain; and other major European port cities. In
each case, ships may take a longer, slower southern route past the
Canary Islands, or the shorter and quicker northern course.
While a few of these voyages
include visits to ports along the way - such as the Canary Islands on
the southern crossings or Iceland on the northern path - the unique
character of the transatlantic cruise makes these simply short
diversions from the main event - the transit across the vast expanse
of the Atlantic.

Ready for New Places
Feb 5 - Carnival Conquest
returned to service this week after an extensive refit, sporting some
new features. The ship will continue to sail 7-day
cruises from Galveston, but in two weeks, it will debut a whole new
alternate itinerary that will take cruisers boarding in Galveston
farther east than they are used to. CLICK
HERE for the details.
Going Slow in San Diego
Feb 4 - Arrival and departure at
San Diego may seem a little more leisurely beginning next month,
almost like a sightseeing excursion of the port. That's because
effective March 1, the port has asked cruise ships and cargo vessels
to observe a new, lower voluntary speed limit.
Studies have demonstrated that
there is a significant reduction in air emissions when vessel speeds
are reduced, and that leads to improved air quality in the area.
Coming to a Convenient
Location near You
Feb 9 - Last summer as part of
our coverage of Eurodam's inaugural we told readers about a brilliant
idea Holland America had that was launched on the new ship. The
Canaletto Restaurant has been so well received on the flagship,
Holland America decided to expand it to other ships, and by late
spring, passengers on four additional ships will have an additional
dining option.
NCL Sets 2010/2011
Caribbean Program from Florida
Feb 10 - A couple of weeks ago,
Norwegian Cruise Line detailed the program for the inaugural season
of Norwegian Epic which will sail to the Caribbean from Miami
beginning in the summer of 2010. Today, the line released the balance
of their Caribbean program from Florida for the following winter
season, and it includes a new Florida homeport.
Beginning in October 2010, the
77,000-ton Norwegian Sun will be homeported at Port Canaveral
seasonally for 7-day eastern and western Caribbean cruises.
Crystal adds hefty Europe
on-board credit
Feb. 12 - Crystal
Cruises became the latest luxury operator to offer a hefty on-board
credit for Europe sailings, following similar moves by Silversea
Cruises and, effectively, Regent Seven Seas Cruises.
Crystals offer of a $2,000
spending credit per couple is the most generous to date and may be
used for excursions, spa treatments, wine and cocktails, boutique
purchases, gratuities and the Vintage Room.
The credit applies to 17 sailings
and is available with every Crystal Serenity Mediterranean cruise
from July through November, all 11-day Baltic and British Isles
cruises aboard Crystal Symphony between June 19 and Aug. 23, and
Crystal Symphonys trans-Atlantic cruise from London to New York.
TUI contest names Mein
Schiff
Feb 11 - In a contest carried out
with Bunte, the German celebrity magazine, more than 11,000 people
suggested over 30,000 names for the first TUI Cruises vessel,
debuting this spring.
The winning name is Mein
Schiff (My Ship), which has been used to describe the cruise
concept since September and was not only one of the most frequently
suggested names but also convinced the judges.
TUI Cruises Mein Schiff --
the former Celebrity Galaxy -- will be christened May 15 in Hamburg.

Last Time's Question:
How many
ship calls is Grand Turk Island expecting this year?
The
Answer is :
229
Not 500,000 as a few people said. The question was "ship

We wanted to
make this the easiest question ever, and we still had a couple of

that really long extension cord!
