Big Spenders??  Royal Caribbean's much-ballyhooed, 5,400-passenger Oasis of the Seas is proving itself a winner for the line in more ways than one.

Royal Caribbean Chairman Richard Fain says that in addition to commanding unusually high ticket prices, the world's largest cruise ship also is generating huge revenue from customers once they get on board.

Fain notes that the new Solstice Class ships at Royal Caribbean's sister line, Celebrity Cruises, also are generating higher on-board revenue as well as higher up-front ticket prices.

The 2,850-passenger Celebrity Solstice debuted in late 2008 and a sister ship, the Celebrity Equinox, arrived in mid- 2009. Three more Solstice Class ships are on order.

"These new (Royal Caribbean and Celebrity) ships are incrementally more expensive to build, but they are quantumly more profitable to operate," Fain says. "That combination generates better returns on our investment."

The new Royal Caribbean and Celebrity ships are packed with more places where passengers can spend money such as extra-charge restaurants and stores, helping to boost on-board revenue.

Goldstein says concerns over the ship's record size have proved unfounded.

"The ports have no issues handling the ship, and our pier check-in ratings at the fabulous new Terminal 18 in Port Everglades have been higher for Oasis than for any other ship in the fleet for every one of her sailings thus far," he notes.

The vessel, he says, "has exceeded our expectations."

Disney  Line unveils new features for next ship

The top of Disney Cruise Line's next ship will feature a miniature golf course themed around Goofy and a water play area for kids that has Nemo as its inspiration.

The 2,500-passenger Disney Dream, currently under construction at a shipyard in Germany, also will boast an adults-only decktop pool area with a swim-up bar.

The new decktop features, unveiled today, are in addition to a previously announced high-speed flume ride that will wrap around the top of the vessel  -- a cruise industry first.

The Dream is Disney's first new cruise ship in more than a decade. It's scheduled to debut on Jan. 26, 2011.

Disney says Goofy's Golf, as the nine-hole miniature golf course is to be called, is part of an interactive sports deck that also will have two digital sports simulators and two mini-sized sports courts where small children can play soccer and basketball. There also will be a full-court basketball area that can be transformed into a mini soccer pitch or volleyball court.

MSC Cruises to base ship in England for first time

SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND — Southampton's status as one of the world's key cruise ports has been underlined by news the last of the industry's Big Three is to start major operations here next year.

The Daily Echo can exclusively reveal MSC Cruises is to base the 60,000-ton ship MSC Opera in the city– the first time it has ever operated here.

Norwegian Cruise Line's next ship, Epic, to sail in the Mediterranean

Norwegian Cruise Line says its newest and largest ship ever, the Norwegian Epic, will be dispatched to Europe for the summer of 2011 -- the latest sign of the continent's growing importance in the cruise business.

The line announced that the 4,200-passenger vessel, which debuts later this year, will spend the summer sailing seven-day Western Mediterranean voyages out of Barcelona.

The Mediterranean itinerary will include calls in Livorno, Italy (for Florence and Pisa); Civitavecchia, Italy (near Rome); Naples; and Palma, Majorca, Spain. Fares start at $699 per person, based on double occupancy.

Charleston mayor: One cruise ship at a time is enough for historic city

Charleston mayor Joe Riley said Tuesday that the cruise industry is welcome to bring ships to the historic city, but only up to a point.

"It is important that the cruise ship business, like other things in Charleston, be at the right scale," Riley said during his annual State of the City address. "A great port like Charleston should have a cruise ship line calling on it, as we have had ships carrying passengers since we were founded.  But it is also important that we don't be overwhelmed by this activity."

Riley's comments come as industry giant Carnival gears up to offer the first year-round cruises from the city starting in May. The line is moving the 2,056-passenger Carnival Fantasy to Charleston from Mobile, Ala.

Also ramping up sailings from Charleston this year is Celebrity Cruises, which has begun offering a seasonal series of 10- and 11-night voyages to the Eastern and Western Caribbean on the Celebrity Mercury. It's the first time the line has sailed out of Charleston since 2003.

Are They Sustainable? Classic Vessels: Culture Over Caviar

The recent launch of two new cruise lines tied to the former Orient Lines brands, which operated one small, upscale cruise ship and focused on culture and history, suggests that there may be room to expand the niche cruise market.

Gerry Herrod, the founder of Orient Lines, is behind the launch of Voyages to Antiquity, a cruise line centered on Mediterranean history and culture. Herrod purchased a 1973-built ship, the Aegean Odyssey, to launch Voyages to Antiquity, a line that is focused on cruisers more interested in culture than caviar, and less about hardware than hard facts.

You won’t find a casino on board or big Broadway shows. What you will find are wonderful lecturers and lots of opportunity for immersion and enrichment.
