From your editor

Dear Readers:

Once again, due to technical difficulties, your newsletter is a day late.  We apologize for the delay.  We are told that the techies are working on the problem.  We hope you enjoy this issue. We have lots of news and other features.

Time to update your subscription

Once or twice a year we ask our subscribers to update their information for us. All you need to do is click on the link down at the bottom of the newsletter, and then update your info with your current cruising interests and your state of residency.  We would really appreciate it. This helps us serve you better by knowing where you live, what interests you, and if you happen to be a senior.

From Last Week

Last week we published an article by Anne Campbell about the people that staged a demonstration aboard the Queen Mary 2.  We got several emails from folks that weren't paying attention and thought that I wrote the article.  I printed the article because I thought Anne made several good points.  Perhaps the most overlooked point is that people have no idea what is in their cruise contract (your cruise ticket) because they do not read it

You need to realize that the Captain of any ocean vessel, cruise ship or otherwise, has full control of the ship, and has the authority to change the itinerary as he sees fit.  We don't need people creating anarchy by staging demonstrations (for the media) because they don't like a decision made by the Captain.

Well, here's more from Anne Campbell,  Editor In Chief of Cruisemates.com

I'm often befuddled by the number of times relatively ordinary occurrences aboard cruise ships end up being headline news on TV and in newspapers. The only murder I can recall ever happening on a passenger vessel resulted in a Congressional committee hearing. A very ordinary intestinal virus that runs rampant throughout the U.S. warrants special notice in the national media when it strikes passengers on a ship. A handful of irate passengers on a noteworthy vessel complain loudly about missing ports and once again it's a huge news story. Cruising is actually the smallest segment of the travel industry, but when was the last time CNN excitedly reported about angry airline passengers, or a minor virus outbreak at a hotel or resort?

The cruise experience gets a 97% positive satisfaction rating from passengers, but based on the media coverage, you'd think there were huge risks involved with stepping onto a ship. As someone who has been on roughly 80 of them, I've never experienced any problem more serious than the weather deciding to not to cooperate. I certainly don't mind bypassing Grand Cayman when the Captain decides the seas are too rough -- the alternative is getting seasick in a small boat, tossed around like a pancake.

The cruise industry credits the old TV series Love Boat with initially capturing the public's interest in cruising. Could it be that the news media thinks every cruise should be like a television program? Like celebrities, ships will always be seen as inherently glamorous. And as with celebrities, people apparently love to see them trip on the red carpet.

From The Mailbag:

Dear Jim,  Just read your article "Can't Make This Stuff Up". (Jan 30th issue; about the guy that couldn't find the food)  I have just one question, did he find the bars?  We just returned from our 26th cruise and I am happy with only gaining three pounds.  Book him on the next cruise with my husband and me.  He can follow us to the food.   Regards, Vicky Morris

To Al Novello: (Tip of the Week, Feb. 6th issue)  YOU SHOULD NEVER CARRY YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD IN YOUR WALLET!  LEAVE IT HOME WHERE IT BELONGS.  YOU DON'T NEED IT FOR ANYTHING--I'M SURE YOU KNOW THE NUMBER.   Connie Lipman

The Cuiseman provided me with excellent service, very timely, very accurate, and complete satisfaction.   Phil Shafer

Jim was very helpful, especially after we had to rebook because our original cruise was canceled.  Eric Conner

Thanks Eric & Phil.  I appreciate the good word!  CLICK HERE for more testimonials.

Cruiseman news

NCL hopes to strike it big with bowling alley on Norwegian Pearl

When Norwegian Cruise Line’s next ship, the Norwegian Pearl, debuts in 2007, the vessel will house the industry’s first onboard bowling alley.  The full-size, four-lane, ten pin alley aboard the Norwegian Pearl will be part of a sports bar and nightclub complex called Bliss.  During the day, the bar area will show sports on flat-screen TVs and feature air hockey, foosball and arcade games. At night, the bar area in Bliss will become a dance club with a live DJ.   The bowling alley will remain open day and night.

Oceania alters Med itinerary, pulling Libya stops

Citing complications that make it difficult to guarantee its passengers entry into Libya, Oceania Cruises pulled Libya off a May 21 Mediterranean itinerary aboard the Insignia sailing from Barcelona, Spain, to Lisbon, Portugal.  Oceania substituted Benghazi and Tripoli, Libya, with stops in Sorrento, Amalfi, Taormina and Rome, Italy. The rest of the itinerary remains the same, with stops in Malta, Tunisia and Morocco.

SeaMobile signs Oceania

SeaMobile, Inc. signed an agreement with Oceania Cruises to provide technology that will enable passengers to use their own cellular phones and wireless PDAs while at sea. Charges will go to the wireless customer’s bill from their home carrier. Regatta will become the first ship in Oceania’s fleet to deploy SeaMobile’s wireless services.

Crown Princess plans summer film fest

Princess Cruises surveyed members of its alumni club on their favorite cruise-related movies, scenes and film stars and will show the winning selections throughout the summer on the new Crown Princess’ giant poolside LED screen.

Some 45,000 Princess Captain’s Circle members voted in the ‘Captain's Awards Summer Film Festival,’ with categories set by Princess.

For example, playing on the line’s ‘Escape Completely’ branding, passengers selected as ‘Best Escape Movie’ &ldots; ‘The Shawshank Redemption.’ ‘Best Smooch at Sea’ &ldots; Leonardo DiCaprio & Kate Winslet in ‘Titanic.’ ‘Favorite Movie Princess’ &ldots; Audrey Hepburn in ‘Roman Holiday.’ ‘Captain Most Likely to Steal Your Heart’ &ldots; Johnny Depp in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean.’ Other categories ranged from ‘Most Romantic Balcony Scene’ to ‘Best Performance by a Lobster.’

Crown Princess will debut in June with roundtrip Caribbean sailings from the new Brooklyn Cruise Terminal.

Freedom fitness center will pack a punch

A full-size boxing ring will be among the many new features of the world’s largest floating fitness center, debuting in May on Freedom of the Seas.

Freedom’s ShipShape Fitness Center will offer an Everlast boxing ring, a group Pilates reformer studio and other elements developed in conjunction with Royal Caribbean International’s long-time spa provider, Steiner Leisure Ltd.

Freedom’s Fight Klub will offer one-on-one training sessions with an instructor inside a 20-foot by 20-foot boxing ring. Multiple Everlast speed bags, jump ropes, heavy bags and padded punching mitts will be available. Groups of three people can take part in supervised sparring sessions with freestanding body master bags. Rocky wannabes can train in three one-hour sessions with a coach.

New Itinerary for Grand Princess

Princess' Jan Swartz reports that Grand Princess has a new itinerary in which Playa Del Carmen replaces Grand Cayman, and some of the port calls, such as in Belize, have been lengthened. "We originally made this change due to engine problems but have now decided to maintain it, as we are seeing high passenger satisfaction scores with the new itinerary," says Swartz.

New Ship for Holland America

Holland America took delivery on Jan. 31 of the Noordam from Italian shipyard Fincantieri at a ceremony in Venice. The ship, the fourth and last of the line's Vista class, is en route to New York, where actress and godmother Marlee Matlin will christen the ship on Feb. 22. The ship will then embark on its maiden voyage and offer a series of 10- and 11-day Caribbean cruises.
