The Cruiseman got a nod from USA Today's Cruise Log with the question "Does it matter where your cabin is on a cruise ship? "    CLICK HERE to see the various replies our question received.

You probably read about the closing of the La Guardia airport over the weekend.  Thousands of people missed their flights and no-doubt hundreds missed their cruise. I wonder if they bought Travel Insurance for their trips. If they did they would have been able to get some or all of their money back.  Don't need Travel Insurance?  Think again.  CLICK HERE for details.

From The Mailbag

We could not have picked a better cruise to see Europe. Even our weather was perfect!  What we saw and did was worth every penny and more! Every detail was taken care of for us. We had no surprises along the way. All we had to do was say where and went and Jim took care of the rest, Thanks again! When we had questions they were quickly answered. I would recommend "The Cruiseman" to everyone. -- Craig & Donna Journey (Jewel of the Seas - 6/22/09)

Carnival to take things up a notch with buffet on next cruise ship

Industry giant Carnival plans some notable upgrades to the buffet on its next ship, the Carnival Dream, including the line's first made-to-order pasta station.

Already known for one of the best buffets of any mass-market line, the company today announced the 3,646-passenger vessel's Lido deck eatery will have a pasta bar offering a range of pastas, sauces and ingredients that can be mixed-and-matched to order.

The two-deck buffet eatery, dubbed The Gathering, will be the biggest ever on a Carnival ship and also include a burrito bar -- a concept the line debuted last year on the Carnival Splendor to rave reviews -- and a made-to-order Mongolian wok station (another recently added concept that has been a hit).

Would you pay $95 for a behind-the-scenes tour of a cruise ship?

Always wondered what it's like behind-the-scenes on a cruise ship? For $95, industry giant Carnival now will show you.

Carnival is following in the footsteps of Princess Cruises in offering elaborate behind-the-scenes ship tours across its fleet. The line says in an announcement today that it has been testing the concept in recent weeks on two ships and will roll it out on 10 more vessels by September.

Dubbed the Behind the Fun tour, the $95-per-person outing lasts three-and-a-half hours and includes a visit with key shipboard officers such as the captain, chief engineer and chef de cuisine.

Princess ship returns from Alaska cruise with rare whale pinned to bow

In a very rare incident  , a Princess vessel pulled into Vancouver on July 25th with a rare fin whale pinned to its bow.

The 2,670-passenger Sapphire Princess had just returned from a week-long Alaska cruise along the scenic Inside Passage -- a coastal route known for its rich wildlife.

"We were shocked and saddened by this discovery, and sincerely regret the circumstances which led to the whale's death," Princess says in a statement. "It is unknown how or when this could have happened."   Princess notes that its ships use strict whale avoidance procedures when in the vicinity of marine life.
