From your editor |
I want to thank all the people that took the time to post their
opinions about "all the missing people" affecting their
plans to cruise. Here are some of our favorites:
-
We have met a few people on cruises we wouldn't have minded seeing disappear.
-
Since the missing groom story came out my wife wants to cruise more
than ever. Should I be worried?
-
Wouldn't be the first drunk to fall overboard; won't be the last.
-
People mysteriously disappearing for cruises lately has no effect on
whether I will cruise again. I love cruising and will continue to
cruise. A couple of small incidents are nothing to worry about.
-
Rogue waves (a la NCL), Norovirus, and disappearing pax are all rare
events hyped by the media that incessantly needs stories. And the
more sensational the better. (Boston had a bigger Norovirus incident,
but that wasn't newsworthy.) We'll cruise again and again without
fretting for a moment.

Happy Hour Clarification.
A couple of people that were reading too fast thought we said last
week that Royal Caribbean & Celebrity had banned Happy Hour!
No, no, no!
Here's what we said: "Since
Royal Caribbean & Celebrity
banned discounts on their cruises several months ago, these "Happy
Hour" specials are always going to be your best deal, if
you can decide on short notice."
Here's tomorrow's Happy
Hour! CLICK

No Newsletter: There will be no newsletter for the next two
weeks. Your Editor and Mrs. Cruiseman will be leaving Saturday for
some cruising aboard the Mariner of the Seas and the Fantasy. While
we are gone we will have an agent on duty to take your calls
and emails. After our return we will write up ship reviews for your
reading pleasure!

cruiseman articles |
Great expectations summarizes my feelings prior to my recent
transatlantic cruise aboard the Queen Mary 2, England's most touted
cruise ship. Now that I'm back on terra firma, I can wholeheartedly
say that the QM2 is everything I expected and in some cases, more.

When Carnival Cruise Lines launched its first product in 1973, an
inexpensive party cruise, it was the bottom feeder of the industry:
Lower than a snakes hips, as CEO Bob Dickinson
likes to say. Yet today, if passengers turn over the plates in one of
Carnivals reservations-only, $30-per-person Supper Clubs, a
mainstay on all its newest ships, they will discover that the brand
of china is Versace.

Cruiseman news |

Legendary singer Carly Simon will be aboard QM2's September 2
transatlantic crossing from New York to Southampton to perform two
concerts. They will be recorded both for distribution on DVD and for
airing on PBS.
Last week Carnival Cruise Lines announced it had extended its
contract with the City of Mobile to operate from that port for
another year. Carnival will conclude their first year of operation
from the Alabama port in October.
Last week, Princess made the decision to cancel Grand Princess'
call at Kusadasi on Friday due to security concerns. Instead, the
line substituted a call in Greece at Rhodes. Itinerary changes for
security reasons usually come on short notice, affect only one call,
and aren't publicized. They usually only effect a few ships, and then
only for a single call by each. At the end of July, two Royal
Caribbean ships also canceled a call at the Turkish port, yet there
was little notice taken (except by the people on the ships). In the
intervening weeks, other ships full of Americans and Europeans have
called at Kusadasi without incident.
In an article picked up widely in the newspapers of Caribbean
nations, the Associated Press reported this week that the Cuban
government ended a contract with the company administering the
island's cruise terminals following remarks by President Fidel Castro
that cruise ships exploit small Caribbean countries. Earlier, Castro
said that Cuba would not be accepting more cruise ships as tourists
coming in on them "leave their trash ... for a few miserable
cents." At last count, more than 60,000 cruisers, mostly
Europeans, annually visit Cuba.

passport update 3.0 |
|
Well, after all we said 2 weeks ago about the passport deadline
looming near, now comes word that the "guidelines" will be revised.
"The United States has withdrawn a proposed December deadline
for implementing new rules that would require Americans to show
passports when returning from the Caribbean, an official said
Wednesday." (USA Today 8/18) CLICK
HERE for the rest of this article.
We will keep you updated as soon as new implementation dates are announced.
(We still recommend that you go ahead and get your passport now!)
